Silverlake,
that edgy,
eclectic,
laid back,
bohemian
little piece
of LA, or as
my friends
say, that
area of town
with the
dirty
sidewalks,
has a new
little hip,
hot and
happening “barstaurant”
that needs
to be
checked out.
The Barbarella
Bar is the
latest
offering
from the
management
team that
brought you
the Bungalow
Club over on
Melrose and
though all
the reviews
may not be
in yet, it
has already
made quite a
name for
itself.
If however,
an homage to
the 1968
Jane Fonda
cult classic
is what you
are looking
for, you
won’t find
it here. No
lasers or
space
angels, but
the staff is
in black
bustiers and
form fitting
blacks
shorts,
which is the
closest
thing you
get to any
kind of “kitch”
movie feel.
But hey, if
the name is
what gets
you in the
door, you
will still
be glad you
took a
chance.
When you
walk in the
first thing
you surely
notice is
the polished
wooden bar
about the
size a small
landing
strip. So
belly up to
one of the
50 suede
tufted
stools and
sit on down, there
is room for
everyone.
Perhaps you
could start
out with the
10oz Ginger
Cucumber
Martini,
that’s a lot
of martini
and a lot of
glass, they
use a whole
cucumber doncha know.
If beer is
more your
thing, than
you are in
luck, the
Barbarella
Bar has more
than two
dozen micro
brews from
around the
world. For
your best
bet, get a
beer flight
and take a
trip from
Germany to
Belgium to
Spain, all
without
leaving your
seat.
Once you
have your
drink of
choice, you
can hang at
the bar,
seat
yourself in
the candle
strewn
lounge or
follow the
bar around
and watch it
lead you
into two
rather
different
areas. One
way leads to
the intimate
and mellow
dining area
with silver
leather
seating and
soft
lighting,
while the
other takes
you to the
cavernous
dance area
with a DJ
riser, huge
chandelier
and red
leather
banquets.
Feeling like
some nosh
when you
find the
perfect
place to
perch and
before you
drown
yourself
(literally
if you
wanted to)
in your
drink? Then
might I
suggest the
Thai mussels
in a coconut
broth with
red curry,
the Cajun
Alfredo
pasta,
Bangkok
hummus with
sautéed
mushrooms (mmmm),
a Spanish
pizza with
jamon
Serrano fig
puree and
arugula or
just classic
mac and
cheese. Hey,
never diss
the
classics.
They have
that name
for a
reason.
Half price
happy hour
is everyday
from 4 to 7
with a DJ on
Friday and
Saturday
nights to
really work
up that
thirst. The
Barbarella
Bar has not
been around
long, but
already the
Silverlake
community is
embracing it
and loving
the addition
to their
hood. Come
see what all
the buzz is
about and
you might
just find a
great new
place to
hang after
work with
your friends
or dance to
the wee
hours on a
Saturday
night.
Either way,
everyone
should
experience a
little Barbarella
at least
once in
their life.
Perhaps this
weekend is
your time.
