This Weekend -- Wine & Dine
Summertime, and the Dining is Easy

At the heart of the So Cal surf culture is the historic landmark Malibu pier, recently re-opened after a modest $10 million renovation. At the end of this humble little pier is the just opened less than 2 weeks ago Beachcomber Malibu, new sister to the OC Crystal Cove locale.

The Beachcomber is vintage Malibu, with a view one would expect from the end of a long platform built over the water. And the menu just begs to be tried for all 3 squares. For breakfast, a Filet Mignon Chilaquiles; corn tortillas layered with filet, cheddar cheese, spicy roasted tomato puree and a sunny-side-up egg, all topped with avocado puree. Lunch would be a tough choice between Baked Bleu Tomato Soup, Calamari with house made Green Goddess dressing for dipping, or the Wild Mushroom and Truffle Mac-n-Cheese, so I would have to go with one of each! Dinner would most definitely be the Seafood Pot Pie with lobster, shrimp and scallops…..delectable. This is old school cuisine with a California contemporary twist and it is all good.

Drinks are fun too and have great names that make you want to try them no matter what combination of booze and juice they throw in; specialties like the Zuma Surfer, rum, tequila and pineapple juice. Or The Bootlegger, a refreshing signature drink made with banana rum, orange and pineapple juices served over ice. Then there is the The Drifter, a creamy concoction fit for the cove and those ready to lounge….. Amaretto, Kahlua, rum and vanilla vodka. And to find out what is in a Sea Otter Pop, well, you just need to make a visit to this place yourself.

The joint has not been opened long enough to know just who the clientele will be; tourists with pockets deep enough for the pricey offerings, locals, totally for sure dude, and since many “locals” in Malibu just happen to have celebrity status, well, star gazing will most likely be on the menu too. Only time will tell if the new kid on the pier has staying power, or not. For now, The Beachcomber is open, so catch a wave to the end of the pier and hang for at least ten.
