On Beverly
Boulevard, West
Hollywood/Melrose
way, is
Jar, a
modern
chophouse. What
makes it modern
are the twists
on retro
favorites, the
décor, and the
prices; the menu
full of
mouth-watering
meat choices is
chophouse all
the way. Think
an ice berg
wedge, a martini
and a
porterhouse,
with a chocolate
pudding finish.
But really, most
dishes are not
that
straightforward
at Jar – and
that is a good
and tasty thing.
The Deviled Eggs
appetizer is
made with crab,
the Lobster
Cocktail with
green mango,
currant tomato
and spicy lime
vinaigrette. And
Oysters on the
half shell are
in a black
pepper ponzu.
One of the
signature dishes
and a personal
favorite at this
spot is Jar’s
Signature Pot
Roast – it is
really quite
spectacular – a
huge chunk of
beef roasted to
moist perfection
with caramelized
onions and
carrots. Add a
side of Japanese
purple yams with
crème fraîche
and chives, and
you’ve got an
updated version
of mom’s Sunday
dinner staple.
The service here
is top notch,
and the place is
just pretty to
look at in a
very comforting
way – lots of
brown hues, all
tied together in
a supper club
kind of vibe,
circa the
1940’s. The
chef, Suzanne
Tracht, has
quite a culinary
following and
her food does
not disappoint.
Diners should
know that all
main courses are
served a la
carte, and
adding on a few
sides will kick
your check up a
notch, but for
special
occasions, it is
definitely worth
raiding your
cookie jar to
visit this Jar
of
deliciousness.
