Take a Walk on the Starry Side

LA has an underbelly alright, and at Starry Kitchen it is pork, braised in coconut. Actually, when Starry Kitchen first hit the scene you were living on the foodie edge when paying a visit to #205, a non-descript apartment in North Hollywood that housed the underground speakeasy restaurant. Yes, you had to be naughty to get your Noodles of the Korean Glass persuasion. And know people who knew things, as the LA foodie scene was a buzz with this little kitchen that could.

But that was before. What was a culinary covert operation is now a legit restaurant in a hard to find location in Downtown LA, but well worth the hunt. Starry Kitchen was born as the adventure of a young couple and their exploration of Pan-Asian comfort food concoctions. As they put it, they are foodies who serve food. Cooking for family and then friends, and then friends of friends and anyone who could read a blog, the word of mouth became so loud that this unique food hang got shutdown.

But that is when things really got started. Now open just over a month in their new brick and mortar location (things came together really quickly) their loyal following is growing.

The couple has 50 or so dishes that they rotate – there is no regular menu, even for the regulars, sometimes much to their dismay. But they usually bring the favorites back into rotation by popular demand. The Pan Asian inspirations are familiar dishes, sort of; chicken curry taco’s, a taiwanese popcorn chicken wrap, a kalbi burrito with buttered kimchi fried rice. Checking their website daily or being part of their Twitter base is the only way to really know what the kitchen is serving on any given day, or hour. It is what they call a rotation revolution.

This joint is food cult following at its best. It is casual. It is beyond hip. And it is delicious. And nothing is over $10. Finally, something new and innovative on the food scene. Starlight, star bright, guess you answered my wish tonight.
