It’s not
everywhere that
you can dine
under the glow
of Christmas
lights
intertwined with
puffer fish, nor
should it be.
But in Santa
Monica, there is
such a spot, and
most likely,
this place is
older than you.
Since 1934, The
Galley has been
serving up its
seafaring vibe
to Angelinos,
and today this
historic hidden
treasure, in
fact the oldest
bar and
restaurant in
Santa Monica, is
still doing just
that. With
strong pours at
the bar,
friendly
service, and
generous
portions of
delicious food,
this personality
plus hang is
charm incarnate.
The food is best
described as old
school surf and
turf. Steak
galore is
prepared any way
you like and you
can have just
about any cut
you like. Fresh
fish, lobster,
killer salads
along with a
special famous
house made
secret
ingredient salad
dressing rounds
it out. Not to
forget the
Steamed East
Coast Clams;
4lbs with a cup
of clam broth
and drawn
butter. This
fare is not for
wimps, or people
who lean towards
the lighter side
of dining.
For a true sense
of this joints
attitude all you
really need to
know is this
quote taken
directly from
their website:
Children left
unattended will
be towed away.
Along with the
attitude, The
Galley boasts a
touch of
Hollywood
history, as in
the day it was a
known site of
the tinsel-town
crowd, still
today the walls
adorned with
much such
memorabilia,
many of it
pieces from the
historic 1934
movie “Mutiny on
the Bounty”.
Tonight and
every night for
the past 19
years, the
current owner,
Captain Ron, can
be found at the
helm: table
hopping, telling
jokes and
recruiting
regulars, which
after one visit,
you will want to
be too. So step into The
Galley, and
create your own
history; just
don’t ask what
is in the famous
dressing. That
recipe just
might go down
with the captain
and his ship.
