For More than Just the Sushi Lover

Los Angeles, it seems to me, has more than it’s share of sushi lovers who have been eating this Asian delicacy since they were just little things. That, however, has not been my experience. I would not say I dislike sushi; just that most of the fish I grew up eating was battered, deep fried and called things like planks or sticks before being partnered with fries and a side of slaw. Hey, Mrs. Paul and that fisherman guy didn’t do raw, just frozen, so it isn’t really my fault. Anyway, my point is that whether you are a sushi lover or not, Wokcano in Santa Monica should definitely be on your “places to check out” list

With its dark woods, low tables and leather banquets, Wokcano’s décor is warm, inviting and makes you want to come in and stay for a while. You can choose from the main floor, the upstairs seating area or the outside patio which is especially nice on those warm summer nights. If it’s a Friday or Saturday night you can even stay for dancing on the upper deck of the patio while the in-house DJ spins the latest hits.

But before you dance the night away, there are so many other decisions to make. The menu is quite extensive for both the sushi efficiendo and for those, like myself, who aren’t quite sure what everything is. But do what I did and go with a group who have been at this a while and they can point you in the right direction. One of the great things about Wokcano is that it has many things to offer many people including chicken, fish, noodles, and seafood dishes. But my focus was on the Signature Rolls. Even though I wasn’t always sure what I was trying, I found the selection expansive and delicious.

From the Spicy Crabmeat Tempura Roll with its spicy sauce to The Black Pearl with a mixture of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and cream cheese or the Volcano Roll filled with crispy shrimp tempura, I found it a great way to find out what I liked, loved or could just do without. With a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar, my stomach was telling me to stop before I had even realized I had just eaten my dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Wokcano and think that you will too.

Looks like Mrs. P is being retired to the freezer.
